Quake Takes Its Toll on Japanese Automobile Industry

Just like all other sectors of the Japanese economy, the recent earthquake in Japan has shaken up the automobile industry. Most of Japanese giant car manufacturers have suspended production work to assess the damage that the quake has caused.
Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Nissan and Fuji have all temporarily put a halt on their production. As most of the production is exported via sea, companies have opted to monitor the situation first, before sending any consignments abroad. It was reported that a whole shipment of Nissan and Infiniti cars on transit was destroyed by the tsunami. Manufacturers seem to be taking a more cautious approach this time round waiting to hear from the weatherman first.
The quake has hit the country hard; the whole nation is in a state of shock. Carmakers have given their employees some time off to be with their family in this time of grief and sorrow. This temporary break gives the companies a chance to assess the damage on major plants and undertake the necessary repair measures.
This is also to ensure that the working conditions are safe. The decision by the car manufacturers is well informed and must be lauded since the nation is going through a hard time. Exposing employees to hazardous working conditions will only add salt to injury.
