The conventional internal combustion engines cannot be used to directly burn hydrogen but would require a more specialized Hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines popularly known as the H2ICEs. These engines use pressurized hydrogen, which does similar roles just a gasoline does. The engines are relatively cheap and are becoming more popular. Some of the green cars companies are making engines, which are hybrids, and thus they have the ability to use gasoline as well as hydrogen gas. This has been so as to keep owner of the hydrogen cars moving as there are currently few hydrogen filling station in the world. The future of a hydrogen engine quite bright and there is hope that the engine may become the standard one in a period less than ten years.
Some of the green cars manufacturers who are making the H2ICE engines include Mazda and BMW. These “dual fuel” engines have the ability to be switched from hydrogen usage to the usage of gasoline via the flip switch. A hydrogen engine in this category has to be well designed to reduce backfiring, which is one of the challenges of the hydrogen fuel source. The cars have to be fitted with dual fuel tank system so that one could be used to store hydrogen and the other gasoline. One of the big time and successful hydrogen fuel cell engines is the SUV Fuel Cell Hydrogen Vehicle, the FCHV, which is made by Toyota Company. The car has a fabulous design with lovely dashboards, which will give you a hint on how the hydrogen engine works. Honda has also made a FCX hydrogen fuel cell electrical vehicle.
The breakthrough in this area will certainly bring green cars and driving into a reality. However, the cars are not common as the hydrogen cells are expensive thus make the car in turn expensive.
